Hair thinning is a common occurrence in both men and women – but that doesn’t mean you aren’t worrying about it! Typically, we will shed 50-100 hairs per day, but it’s when hair starts coming off on your brush in big clumps, and you’re losing upwards of 100 strands per day that you should start to take notice.
While hair thinning is not necessarily a precursor to balding or hair loss, you may still want to talk to an expert before you end up with patchy, uneven hair coverage.
I’m young – should I be worried?
Hair thinning in youth is not necessarily something to worry about, since as we’ve said some hair loss is natural in your day to day life. However, it’s understandable that any sort of hair thinning is bound to come with a variety of self-confidence issues.
If your family has a history of hair loss, or you’re seeing particularly large amounts of loose hair at any one time, then it may be worth a trip to talk to a hair loss expert.
What are the causes?
There are a number of causes that contribute to hair thinning, such as:
- Recent life events (i.e. giving birth or losing a high amount of weight in a short time)
- Medical conditions or genetics
- Using particular hair products or wearing particular hair styles
- High stress levels
- Immune system deficiencies
- Lack of certain vitamins or minerals in your diet.
Is this the same as hair loss?
While it is easy to confuse hair loss and hair thinning, they aren’t necessarily the same thing. Hair loss is more spread out, with hair becoming brittle and more likely to fall out across the whole head.
Thinning, on the other hand, starts in the scalp and is more likely to begin at the crown or along a part line.
Can my hair get thick again?
This mostly depends on the reason why your hair was thinning in the first place – for reasons such as particular products or styles, lack of vitamins and minerals, etc, once changes are made in these areas then you may see your hair regrow and thicken.
