What Causes Post-Pregnancy Hair Loss and How To Treat It.

Postpartum hair loss is common, affecting many women after their pregnancy. It can start occurring three months after childbirth and is relatively temporary, only lasting up to six months. For many people who suffer this type of hair loss, their hair will grow back to its original fullness.

What causes postpartum hair loss?

This type of hair loss is commonly caused by the hormone changes within the body both during, and after pregnancy.

These pregnancy hormones can cause hairs in the growing, or anagen stage to enter the resting, or telogen phase, which is the past phase of the hair’s life cycle. This then causes the hair to fall out prematurely.

The most common signs that you’re experiencing postpartum hair loss is more hair than usual coming away when you brush your hair or in the shower, or more loose hairs stuck to your clothes.

How is postpartum hair loss treated?

Postpartum hair loss doesn’t have any specific treatment, as it is a temporary condition, however there are various steps you can take to help your hair feel fuller and prevent further hair loss.

  • Treat hair with care
The first thing to do is try and be gentler with your hair, by avoiding anything that can aggravate the hair loss. This can include being gentle when washing and brushing hair, using lower heat settings or minimising the use of styling tools such as hair dryers, straighteners or curling irons, and avoiding tight hairstyles such as ponytails or braids.

  • Eat well
Especially during the pregnancy and postpartum stages, it’s important to have a balanced diet that includes a variety of fruits, vegetables and healthy proteins that will ensure your body is getting all the nutrients it needs. Suggestions can include dark leafy greens for iron and vitamin c, eggs for vitamin D and fish for omega-3 and magnesium.

It may also be helpful to take vitamin supplements to ensure you’re getting enough within your diet.

  • Use a volumising shampoo
A volumising shampoo can potentially add body to your hair if it’s been looking limp and help you maintain a thick, luxurious look.
